Northwest Passage Expedition

Keith Tuffley (OKG81), formerly Chairman of Energy Transition & Sustainability, Investment Banking at Citi, is an International Fellow of the Explorers Club in recognition of expeditions he has undertaken to the North and South Poles in 2016 and contributions to awareness of the science of climate change, earth systems and oceans.

In February 2024, Keith left Citi to embark on a new project - leading an expedition to sail across the infamous Northwest Passage from Norway to Alaska - the Ocean Science Expedition. This was a four-month journey from Norway to Iceland, Greenland, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and Alaska to bring attention to the 6 Planetary Tipping Points in the Arctic, and to conduct essential ocean science. He and his crew set sail in early June arriving in Homer, Alaska in mid-October.

Keith, who enjoyed his years at Knox (1976-81), hopes the Expedition will inspire Knox boys to embark on careers that help solve the climate crisis. After Keith studied Economics and Law at Sydney University (1983-87), he chose a "rather traditional career path in Law and Investment Banking".

"I became Head of Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs in 2002, before moving to the UK, and then to Switzerland. I have been active in climate and sustainability work for over 15 years - both in the non-profit sector as the CEO of a global NGO, The B Team, and in the finance sector at Citi."

Keith bought the Abel Tasman yacht in 2015 to be a tool for change by exploring regions of the world that play a critical role in climate change. He has now sailed to Antarctica, the Arctic, and across the Northwest Passage, hosting young scientists, film-makers, and entrepreneurs as members of the crew.
