A lively 65-Year Reunion gathering of the OKG'59 cohort took place in Warrawee on Saturday 2 November. This event fell one day short of 65 years since the running of the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3 November 1959, at which time many OKG '59ers were toiling in the John Williams Memorial Hall on the English II exam of the 1959 Leaving Certificate. Twenty survivors of that era attended, and 25 apologies were received. At least 52 of the OKG'59 cohort have died since schooldays (11 in the last 5 years, alas!) – they were not forgotten. A Toast to the School was proposed by Adrian Stark (organiser of many past OKG'59 Reunions and still active on that front). Many friendships were renewed, and reminiscences abounded. The OKG'59 Reunion Lunch at the Warrawee Club was preceded by a 90-minute tour of the Senior School, ably guided by Lachlan Liao from the OKGA office. This displayed many of the vast developments at Knox since bygone days. The tour concluded with a visit to Knox's impressive Heritage Centre, with a resourceful reception from School Archivist Julie Mason. It is perhaps significant that 80 per cent of those who attended the OKG'59 Reunion had first met at the Preparatory School, some as early as 1948. |
