Fifty Year Old Record Still Stands

In 1975, then year 9 student, Tim Maximoff (OKG78) won the U15 400m Freestyle in a record time of 4.14.50. That same year, Mark Morgan (OKG75) won the Open 400m Freestyle in a record time of 4.19+, five seconds slower than Tim.

When the other age group 400s were added to the School's program, Mark says Tim's swim became the 15 years' record, even though he was 14 at the time of his record swim. The School recently confirmed that Tim's 50-year old record has never been broken, news which came as quite a surprise to both Mark and Tim.

"It is remarkable that any swimming record could last 50 years, especially at a school like Knox with such a strong swimming history and tradition," Mark said.

Mark checked the facts after current student, Dylan Zhou broke the 16 years' 400m record, which was set by Vincent Dai (OKG15) 11 years ago. "

In the 1970s", Mark went on to explain, "the 400s were held after school one afternoon in the School's original 33 and 1/3 yard pool, which was up on the Highway where a School building now stands (i.e. separate from the main School Carnival held in a 50-metre pool at Hornsby or Epping)."

"This means, the 400s were 13-and-a-bit laps, with swimmers finishing at a rope across the pool - how literally 'old school' is that! Tim's swim was kind of semi-short course, although it is still a remarkable time, as evidenced by the fact no one has been able to break it for 50 years!"
