Knox Old Boys Pipe Band Anzac Services
Thursday, 1 May 2025

The Knox Old Boys Pipe Band has been busy in the last month. In addition to Bundanoon in early April, Anzac memorial services spread across most of the month. We played at the Redfern RSL service on Sunday 13 April, a regular gig for the band, with a strong turnout of 14 pipers and drummers from across the years. A week later, Easter Sunday, we played for the Rose Bay RSL in their street march. On Anzac Day, the band provides pipers and drummers to services across the state, rather than marching as a full band in the city. Knox Old Boys Pipe Band members played at the following services:

Canberra: Guy Newton (OKG01)

Turramurra: Peter Doherty (OKG80)

Wahroonga: Aaron Erdstein (OKG21)

Gulgong: Anthony Wicht (OKG98) and Jeremy Wicht (OKG04)

Junee/Jugiong: Daniel Corbett (OKG22)

Pittwater: Ben Riley (OKG11) and Jason Riley (OKG12)

Sydney City: Antony Frank (OKG94), Andrew Stevenson (OKG88), Allan Watts (OKG77), Nick Train (OKG93), Ethan Huang (OKG23), Matthew Lo (OKG23) and Jake Evans (OKG20)

Narrabeen: Mark Broadhead (OKG91)

Wollombi: Rob Tulloch (OKG75) and Angus Stewart (OKG79), together with James Skeates and Mike Young

A golden rule of these events is that you never know who you will meet. Michael Bryden, son of Dr William Bryden (Headmaster 1939-1953), was at the Canberra service where Guy Newton was piping. Michael shared some history of the origins of the Knox Pipe Band. We will share these in full in a future eNews, but the general theme was that starting the Knox Pipe Band in the restrictive post-war years required knowing the right people and having the right shipping contacts to import "luxury items" like bagpipes, kilts and sporrans! He recalled fondly that our gloriously red MacPherson tartan was chosen because Michael's mother's family came from Crieff and were part of the MacPherson clan.
