OKCC Match Report 27/11/22
Monday, 28 November 2022
Last weekend, the Old Boys’ Cricket Club (OKCC) took on a strong I Zingari (IZ) team, needing a win to keep the Club’s Jack Pace Shield (JPS) hopes alive. Continue reading the report from Lachlan Fenwick (OKG13)…

IZ won the toss and elected to bat which gave us the chance to put the pressure on them straight away and let them know we were here to play. Charlie Bangs’ (OKG07) opening spell immediately had IZ under the cosh and he bowled very well just without any luck. I took the first one thanks to a sharp catch from Harry Chapman (OKG15), but after that we couldn’t quite get a breakthrough. Their batters were taking a few risks and moving the score along. Enter Tom Bangs (OKG07) who produced a magnificent spell from the top end. His figures of 2/17 off 7 were exceptional as he slowed the scoring and took key wickets that swung the momentum of the innings in our favour.

Tom bowled in tandem with Tim Lazarus (OKG14) who warmed into his spell and also picked up a very handy wicket. Oscar Alcock (OKG14) was given the thankless task of starting his spell in the 26th over with IZ only 4 down and looking to accelerate. Not only did he take on the challenge enthusiastically, he bowled superbly, picking up two crucial wickets and conceding only 26 runs from his 5 overs.

IZ finished 6/188 which was more reflective of how well they batted than any shortcomings with our bowling or fielding display.

Unfortunately our batting innings didn’t get off to the start we were hoping for. Both Hamish “Denno” Denning (OKG14) and Jack “Stocksy” Stocks (OKG13) were removed early. When our score was 2/15, I was nervous it was going to be another long afternoon. Luckily, I need not have worried, as Fraser “Fritz” Wilson (OKG17) (69 runs*) and Hamish “McG” McGilvray (OKG07) (100 runs) combined for a 171-run stand that utterly demolished the IZ bowling attack. Neither of them looked like getting out in the 25 overs they batted together; a great partnership. It was a pleasure to watch the two contrasting styles, as Fritz would surgically pierce gaps with his technically sound strokes, while at the other end, McG was clearing the rope in his own agricultural style. We passed their score with 3 wickets down in the 31st over to wrap up a seven-wicket win.
