Lighting Stages

After 30 years of working in major theatres around the world, Hugh Hamilton (OKG90), Lighting Designer, Associate and Programmer, recently returned to his very first professional workplace, the Civic Theatre Newcastle with Come From Away. Once a lighting technician and designer on the KGS plays and musicals (1988-90), Hugh started his professional career as a casual technician at the Civic. He has since worked on every continent (except Antarctica), programming lighting consoles and transferring lighting designs to make the creative vision of lighting designers, in countless major productions, a reality.

Hugh’s current focus is transferring the hit Broadway touring shows Come From Away and Hamilton. He also recently finished working on the Phantom of the Opera tour, and next on his schedule is the upcoming tour of Wicked.
Among the audience at the Civic for its first Broadway production in 30 years was Hugh’s father, Richard Hamilton (OKG57), who coincidentally did the lighting and sound for Knox productions while at school.

Some of Hugh’s favourite career experiences to date include working on Miss Saigon in Korea, as well as the shows Rock of Ages and Spamalot. Hugh acknowledges, “the frequent travel has been fun, but hard work”.
