OKG Swimmers on Tour

Five Old Boys recently competed in the Mare Nostrum Swim Tour in Europe. Under the guidance of Head Performance Coach, Nick Dobson (OKG08), the five – Tane Bidois (OKG22), Joseph Hamson (OKG21), Will McDonagh (OKG22), Angus Menzies (OKG20) and Toby Peknice (OKG21) – raced alongside the world’s best (including current and past Olympians) in Canet-en-Roussilion, Barcelona and Monaco.

Coach Dobson said the experience was one the swimmers “will never forget”.

“We took them out of their comfort zones and challenged them to be more independent.
Up against fierce international competition, they raced hard, achieved personal bests and received some great advice from Cate Campbell,” he said.

The best results for the team came in Monaco, where Dobson remarked the pool had a similar set up to Knox.

Individual result highlights
Angus Menzies: Finished 4th overall in two 200m Breastroke events; made two B finals in the 100m Breaststroke, and one B final in the 200 Breaststroke.

Toby Peknice made two B finals in the 50m Backstroke.

Tane Bidois also made two B finals in the 50m Backstroke, as well as one B final in the 100m Backstroke and one B final of the 200m Backstroke.

Joseph Hamson made two B finals in the 50m Butterfly and one B final in the 100m Butterfly.

Sight-seeing and social
It was not all hard work. The group managed to explore Paris before arriving in Canet-en-Roussillon, a small beach town in the south of France. They marvelled at the architecture in Barcelona and watched F1 teams prepare in Monaco. The swimmers and coaches also enjoyed a gala event with H. S. H. Prince Alfred II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Monaco [Mare Nostrum] Tour event.

The Knox Tour was managed by Past Parent, Sam McDonagh and co-organised by Knox Swim Coach and French National, Julie Blaise.
